Know Your Skin Type
First of all it’s important to know you’re skin type so that you can select skin care products to suit you. Do you have normal skin, dry skin, dehydrated skin, oily skin, mature skin, or sensitive skin?

Dry or Very Dry Skin
Products with a high cream and oil content are beneficial. Avoid using soap and detergent based products on the face and neck as these can be drying. Oil-based face masks are soothing and hydrating fro dry skin.

Dehydrated Skin
Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, aim for 2 litres per day.

Oily Skin
Cleansing and moisturising milks or lotions have a higher water content and a lighter consistency and are less likely to cause congestion. Be careful not to over exfoliate the skin as this can stimulate increased production of oil.

Combination Skin
Treat the different areas of the face with products specific to their needs. For example light formulation in the oilier T Zone area and richer creamier products in the dry areas. The skin will benefit from a hydrating mask on the cheeks and a deep cleansing mask on the forehead, nose and chin.

Mature Skin Care
As with dry skin choose richer creamier oil based products. Skin may be thin or have broken capillaries so it should always be treated with great care and very little pressure. Firming and anti ageing products are highly beneficial, as are specific neck and eye care products.

Sensitive Skin Tips
Not only is sensitive skin more likely to react to product ingredients, but also the damaging effects of the sun can be felt more easily. It is advisable to use an SPF of 50. A gentle peeling product that doesn’t contain granules is gentler on the skin than an exfoliating scrub.

Now that we’ve looked at different skin types, what kind of facial therapy products are out there and what can they do for your skin?

Facial Cleanser
These remove make up leaving skin clean and free from impurities. Some cleansers are gentle enough to be used on the eye area but if you wear waterproof mascara you will require a specific eye makeup remover.

Toning Lotion
These remove traces of cleanser, refreshes the skin and has a temporary tightening effect upon the pores. Refreshes the skin and helps to restore the skin’s PH.

Moisturiser
Often described as day creams or hydrating lotions, they nourish the skin to leave it soft and smooth. Oil and water emulsions attract water to the skin and prevent moisture loss by evaporation. Moisturiser should be applied to the skin after cleansing and toning. Some moisturising creams and lotions contain SPF and help protect the skin against environmental damage. Not only do moisturisers hydrate and condition the skin, they provide an excellent base for makeup application.

Eye creams
Eye Creams are specially designed to moisturise and protect the delicate skin around the eye. They often contain collagen, oils and vitamins and some contain light diffusing particles to help draw attention away from dark circles beneath the eyes.

Neck Creams
Neck moisturising and firming creams are more hydrating than ordinary moisturisers. In our 20s and 30s our usual moisturiser is usually sufficient to nourish the neck and décolletage, but by our 40s and beyond the neck often requires more intense hydration. The added benefits of collagen and elastin are believed to help prevent sagging and ageing thus maintaining a youthful appearance.

Exfoliation
Exfoliating products are creams or gels that contain small particles which gently scrub the skin to remove dead skin from the surface revealing fresh, new skin beneath. By loosening surface blockages they help improve and prevent breakouts and give a healthy glow to previously tired looking complexions. Exfoliators are a great way to even out a fading tan.

Face Masks
There are a variety of different formulations of face mask available that perform different actions. Facial masks are a relaxing and therapeutic part of a skin care routine. They increase circulation and improve the overall colour of the skin.

A deep cleansing mask removes traces of trapped dirt, debris and oil. They’re mildly exfoliating. Dry flaky areas of skin are replaced with soft, smooth skin. Toning and refining masks soothe tired skin. Skin is freshened and revitalised and pores appear smaller leaving a more refined complexion. Nourishing and hydrating masks contain soothing moisturising ingredients which hydrate the skin leaving it soft and smooth. They also soothe tired looking skin.

Sun screens and sun blocks
A facial sunscreen is an essential all year round beauty aid. Choose one with an SPF of at least 15. Even on dull days the suns rays penetrate the atmosphere and the damaging effects upon the skin accumulate gradually resulting in pigmentation and premature ageing. In more extreme circumstances, this can lead to sunburn and permanent scarring.

What Can A Simple Pill Do To The Human Body?

Friday, February 29, 2008

Viagra exploded onto the erectile dysfunction scene many years ago. It has since been the leader in erectile dysfunction remedies, along with its close counterpart Cialis. But many prescription drugs are particularly harmful to the human body; where does Viagra and Cialis fit?

The Good: How Viagra Works for Your Body

The problem with erectile dysfunction is simple: there is not enough blood flow to the penis. We can counteract this effect by simply increasing the blood flow- usually with a muscle relaxer. But most common muscle relaxers will indeed relax the entire body- including the penis.

What is needed, specifically, is drugs that can relax the right muscles to stimulate blood flow to the penis- all while keep from relaxing the penis completely. Originally the cure came in the form of an injection- but today we have a pill form known as Viagra.

Getting to the Specifics: What Does Viagra Do?

To actually open up blood flow to the penis for an erection, Viagra decreases the levels of phosphodiesterase, or PDE. This enzyme decomposes a necessary chemical, cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP is necessary to obtain an erection, so therefore stopping the PDE from decomposing this chemical will result in a healthy erection.

Generally, the more cGMP that is built up means the greater the blood flow that is present. This will result in a much healthier erection, even when men suffer from conditions such as erectile dysfunction.

The Side Effects of Viagra

One interesting side effect (that is far from dangerous) is that Viagra will give some users a bluish-tinted perspective. This actually means that pilots are forbidden to take Viagra 12 hours before flying. Other than pilots, everyone else can sit back and enjoy the virtual blue sunglasses.

Viagra does have more serious side effects, however. Viagra is a prescription drug (as compared to over the counter) mainly because a doctor needs to check one's medical history before giving the green light to take the drug. Serious altercations such as heart attacks can result from taking Viagra, so a doctor visit is mandatory before taking Viagra.

Other more common side effects include headaches and related minor annoyances. Aside from these listed side effects, Viagra is actually a very safe drug to use- as compared to other alternatives.

Alternatives to Viagra: Improving on the Blueprint

Drugs such as Cialis work very similarly to Viagra. Whereas Viagra blocks one certain enzyme in the human body, drugs such as Cialis block another, and thus, different side effects result.

The main difference between Cialis-like drugs is that they won't cause color vision changes within users. Cialis users are also able to get an erection for around 18 hours in a day- from what Cialis claims. The only downfall to Cialis is that in 5% of men, muscle ache results from taking the drug.

Cialis is, likewise, generally preferred among pilots. It is also preferred when a male desires to obtain an erection at any point in the day- not just at specific times. However, both drugs have been long proven to give men their life back when concerning erectile dysfunction. Keep in mind that a doctor visit will be necessary to help rule out possible critical side effects.

Once the green light is given, the road to sexual satisfaction will once again be paved in gold.

Vitamins: Fat Or Water Soluble?

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Vitamins are organic substances essential in small amounts for the body's normal growth and activity. They are obtained naturally from plant and animal foods. Vitamins have two classifications, fat- or water-soluble, depending on the materials in which they dissolve.

Fat-Soluble Vitamins:
Fat-soluble vitamins include A, D, E and K. These vitamins are stored in the body's fat tissues before they are absorbed in the blood stream. Because the body stores these vitamins, it is not always necessary to get a fresh supply each day. Caution should be used when taking fat-soluble vitamins to avoid the potential of harmful, toxic levels.

Fat-soluble vitamins are required for the maintenance of healthy bones, skin and hair and for bringing nourishment to the cells. Vitamin A is essential for vision, especially night vision. Vitamin K is essential for the formation of blood-clotting proteins.

The major dietary sources of these vitamins are green leafy vegetables, deep orange or yellow fruits and vegetables, cod liver oil, sardines, butter, egg yolks, fortified milk, almonds, wheat germ, peanut butter, corn oil, sunflower seeds, and liver.

Water-Soluble Vitamins:
Water-soluble vitamins include B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and vitamin C, as well as folic acid and biotin. Water-soluble vitamins, unlike fat-soluble vitamins, are not easily stored in the body and are often lost from foods in the cooking process. It is therefore important to include these vitamins in a daily dietary regimen.

B vitamins are involved in fat and protein breakdown. The B vitamins are required for healthy nervous system function, healthy skin, hair, eyes and liver function. Some of the B vitamins require other B vitamins to work correctly in the body.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is important to the body in the production of collagen, creating connective tissue and supporting our organs. Other functions include protecting the fat-soluble vitamins and preventing scurvy.

The major dietary sources of these vitamins are cereal grains, meat, poultry, eggs, fish, milk, legumes and fresh vegetables. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, guava, red bell pepper, papaya, orange juice, broccoli, green bell pepper, strawberries, cantaloupe, tomato juice, mango, potato,
cabbage, tomato, collard greens, spinach, Brussels sprouts, turnip greens, cauliflower, blackberries, and blueberries.

Lowering Cholestrol With Supplements And A Healthy Diet

HDL is referred to as “good cholesterol”. This type is responsible for returning extra cholesterol not being used to the liver, ready for the breakdown process. This cholesterol type is good only because it enables the excess to be disposed of.

LDL works in a different way. LDL is responsible for transporting cholesterol to all the necessary organs and tissues in our body from the liver.

So what does all this mean to my cardiovascular system? LDL is the problem type of cholesterol when there is more than needed and HDL cannot remove it from our blood vessels and arteries. When the excess amount of cholesterol cannot be removed, it builds up into a plaque-like substance and it starts to clog the artery walls. When this happens, this leaves a lot of room for diseases. With our arteries clogged, there is no possible way we are giving the correct transport of blood to all of our essential organs.

Without a clean blood flow, there is a chance the arteries will become clogged which results in higher blood pressure and can drastically affect our health. With clogged arteries, we are open up to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, a heart attack, strokes and paralysis.

Now that we know the dangers of high cholesterol, how do we lower it to prevent diseases? A correct diet and regular exercise is an excellent place to start.

A proper diet is the first step to lowering or even preventing high cholesterol. There are foods that we eat everyday that are good for us, but some of the foods we love most can cause the most damaging.

Leafy green vegetables are a good source of nutrients to fight off diseases and to maintain a healthy protein level.

Such greens are broccoli, spinach and green beans. Lettuce is also good, although there are not nearly enough nutrients in just lettuce alone. One factor I want to mention when eating your vegetables is to chew your food well. In order to get the most out of our greens, we need to chew them really well, extracting the natural nutrients.

Switching to healthier cooking oils is another step towards lowering your cholesterol. Olive oil and walnut oil are the best cooking oils you can use.

Some other essential foods we can eat to help with cardiovascular disease are baked or grilled fish, fruits and berries and nuts; including walnuts, pecans and peanuts.

Avoiding certain types of food is another way to help lower cholesterol. Red meats and dairy products that have not been reduced of fat may be the first thing to take out of our diet. Although there is protein in these foods, too much of a good thing can be too much.

Adding whole grains to your diet has been known for years to help reduce high cholesterol. The benefits of whole grain are that it is a soluble fiber that will lower LDL (the bad one) and raise the good type of cholesterol, HDL. Oat bran and other whole grain foods are not the only source to

get a good amount of fiber into our bodies to lower LDL. Other sources of fiber include barley, beans and green peas.

Although there is almost no substitute to a proper diet, there are some excellent supplements on the market today that have proven results to lowering cholesterol.

Supplements, as in vitamins and minerals, can really help with cholesterol. Not everyone has the time or dedication to reduce cholesterol with a proper diet. When choosing a supplement, here are some of the ingredients to look for in a quality product targeted to lowering cholesterol.

One of the most known supplements is in the form of fish oils, called Omega-3 fatty acids. This is a stand alone supplement, yet it is in most of the cholesterol lowering supplements out there.

Vitamin B-6 and B-12 are also great supplements. Another proven B vitamin, Niacin, also reduces LDL and raises HDL. If you plan on taking this, take as directed as too much can cause damage to the liver.

Vitamin E is a simple vitamin that will not cause damage in excess. In some cases, just a little extra vitamin E can reduce cholesterol levels.

If you feel you might have high cholesterol, please consult your doctor for tests and before taking a supplement specifically for lowering cholesterol.

Health Benefits And Facts Of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that works to protect cells in the body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive substances that result from normal metabolism as well as from exposure to factors in the environment like cigarette smoke and ultraviolet light. They cause damage to body cells by attacking the cell's membranes, proteins and DNA and ultimately contribute to the development of health problems such as heart disease and cancer.

Vitamin E is also a fat-soluble vitamin that exists in eight different forms with powerful antioxidant activity, the most active being a-tocopherol. Antioxidants protect cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are potentially damaging by-products of the body’s metabolism that may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin E is one of 13 vitamins essential to body metabolism, cell growth and function. It is also known as tocopherol and is an antioxidant important in the formation of red blood cells and the use of vitamin-K-mediated clotting factors. Sources of dietary intake include wheat germ, corn, nuts, seeds, olives, spinach, asparagus and other green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils, and products made from vegetable oils, such as margarine. On average, dietary intake of vitamin E is 10 IU per day. Multivitamin pills usually contain 30 IU to 60 IU of vitamin E.

Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals in the body that cause tissue and cellular damage. Vitamin E also contributes to a healthy circulatory system and aids in proper blood clotting and improves wound healing. Some studies have shown that vitamin E decreases symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and certain types of breast disease.

Nutritionists categorize vitamins by the materials that a vitamin will dissolve in. There are two categories: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins and vitamins A, D, E and k are stored in the fat tissues of the body for a few days to up to six months. If you get too much of a fat-soluble vitamin, it can be stored in your liver and may sometimes cause health problems. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin.

Cataracts are abnormal growths in the lens of the eye, which cloud vision and can lead to blindness. Scientists are looking at antioxidants to see whether they can help prevent or delay cataract growth. So far, their tests have shown that lens clarity, which is used to diagnose cataracts, was better in regular users of vitamin E supplements.

The facts about Vitamin E show that you can reap the most benefits by taking the natural form (most products on the market use the cheaper, synthetic version) and by taking small dosages along with other nutrients that can not only enhance the benefits, but also offset any of the negative effects.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that the body uses to snatch up free radicals. It is also used in the body to regulate cell metabolism, protect Vitamin C from oxidizing, acts at an anti clotting agent, and aids in the production of red blood cells.

Cure For Irritating Acne

The most you need to do in the morning is just splash it with water if you already washed it the night before. You're actually making it worse.
Go to a dermatologist if it's really bothering you. Women can even go on the pill to help control acne.

Acne appears due to one of the following reasons :
1- spicy food , fat rich food , coffee & chocolate
2- hormonal disorder ( high level of androgens )
3- defective personal hygiene

Treatment
1- Dont leave ur skin to become oily
2-increase vegetables in ur diet & drink 2L of water dailly at least
3- use soap containing sulphate
4- U can also use local antibiotic
5-DONT touch diseased skin by any way
6- U should be patient & know that treatment of skin lesions usually takes time

Avoid the temptation to pick, prick and squeeze your acne. This will send the infection deeper into the skin and can cause severe scarring.
For mild to moderate acne, you can use over- the- counter topical ointments, solutions, lotions or gels that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or azelaic acid as an alternative to benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is best at killing P. acnes and may reduce oil production. Resorcinol, salicylic acid, and sulfur help break down blackheads and whiteheads. Salicylic acid also helps cut down the shedding of cells lining the follicles of the oil glands.

Laser surgery has been in use for some time to reduce the scars left behind by acne, but research is now being done on lasers for prevention of acne formation itself.

Antibiotics are the most effective treatment. They can be taken by mouth, or used in a lotion, cream or gel, which should be applied daily before bedtime.

Benzoyl peroxide works for many sufferers. It comes as a gel, lotion or cream, and should be spread thoroughly over dry skin.

Natural Remedies For Treating Acne

Acne

Acne is a tremendously embarrassing and burdensome problem. It is easy to feel that you don't have control over your breakouts. Acne is a skin disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skins sebaceous glands which leads to plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), and outbreaks of cysts or nodules commonly called pimples. They may occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. It is the most common and chronic skin disease.

Natural Remedies

• Take a potent multi-vitamin - Acne can be a sign that something is wrong on the inside. Your skin depends on nutrition. It is a vital organ that is usually neglected. If your body is not receiving the right nutrition, it will fight back. One common way it will rebel is to produce excessive sebum, clogging pores, and reducing the ability for your skin to heal and fight bacteria.

• Strawberries/Strawberry Leaves - Used in a poultice are recommended as an herbal remedy for acne. Egyptians discovered that applying wetted strawberry leaves improved the complexion.

• Include chromium in your diet - Chromium is well known for weight loss diets. But it is also excellent for healing infections on the skin. Taking a chromium supplement once a day will help heal your pimples quickly and prevent future breakouts.

• Drinking a lot of water is very beneficial to your skin. Including fresh fruit and leafy green vegetables in your daily diet will also bring about a marked improvement in the quality of your complexion.

• Before bathing, apply a mixture of tomato pulp – real tomato pulp, not packaged one – honey and rose-water to your face and keep for twenty minutes before washing off.

• Home face wash for acne: Mix together 1 or 2mls each of the following: witch hazel, tea-tree and sweet fennel essential oils, adding essential oil of geranium for women and essential oil of rosewood for men. Mix with 300mls of water. Shake before use, as the oils will float on top of the water during storage. Dab affected areas with cotton wool two or three times a day. The oils will clean and unclog giving antibiotic-like protection to the skin.

• Mix some vinegar and salt in a bowl. Pour a little bit in your hand and rub it on the pimples. Soak a face towel in it and dab it on the bumps. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and rinse it off.

• Mix groundnut oil with an equal amount of fresh lime juice and apply on face. Leave for 10-15 minutes and wash. It may be applied daily to prevent formation of blackheads, acne and pimples.

• Facial steams should not be used for extensive or badly inflamed acne, but can be refreshing and cleansing for a moderate case. Lavender, red clover, and strawberry leaves can be used. A lavender steam kills germs and stimulates new cell growth. In a glass or enameled pot use 2 – 4 tablespoons of dry herb to 2 quarts of water. When the pot is steaming, sit with your face a comfortable distance from the steam and treat for fifteen minutes. Use a towel to trap the steam if you prefer. Afterwards, pat your face with cool water and pat dry.

• For acne scars: Mix 1 tablespoon of sour cream ( 0% fat for oily face), 1 tablespoon of yogurt, 1 tablespoon of grind oatmeal and 3-4 drops of lemon juice. Apply on face, leave for 10 minutes and wash off
